If you have a small front porch you might feel as though you don’t have enough room to work with. The good news is that there are plenty of things you can do to decorate a front porch even with very little space. You might not have room for a big porch swing or for other more elaborate decorating ideas, but you can do a lot with the space you have. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, either.
Here are five ways to decorate your small porch easily and on a budget:
The easiest way to improve a small space is to remove any existing clutter. Too many furniture items, potted plants or other items will make a small porch feel even smaller. Try to reduce the amount of clutter to create the illusion of more space. Extra furniture can be repurposed or donated and many plants can be repotted into hanging baskets to save valuable surface area.
You don’t need much to liven up a small space. Simply adding one source of bright color to your porch can make it more visually appealing and feel more inviting. You can do this several ways, but one excellent way to add color is with flowering plants. A single pot or small planter with vibrant blooms will be enough to improve the aesthetic without taking up too much space. Try pansies for a low-maintenance porch plant perfect for springtime. They come in a wide variety of colors and are happy in shaded spaces like a covered porch.
If you haven’t ever upgraded your outdoor lighting, this might be an excellent opportunity to do so. Replacing an outdoor lighting fixture can change the entire look of your porch in one step. If you’re a fan of vintage or rustic styles, you can often find unique pieces at second-hand stores or flea markets. These will add lots of character with a small price tag. Another thing you can do to enhance the lighting is add string lights. You don’t need to wait for the holiday season to add a cheerful sparkle to your entryway. Stick to soft white LEDs for a warm, cozy look that’s energy efficient.
Never underestimate a good door mat. Not only does this serve the functional purpose of allowing you to wipe excess dirt and moisture off of your feet before you enter, it’s an instant upgrade in comfort. While there are limitless choices of doormat available, opt for one that is made from quality materials and will last a long time. Patterns and messages are a great way to show some character, but be mindful that you pick nothing that might make your guests uncomfortable. You want to create and maintain an excellent first impression and keep your shoes clean.
You may not have a lot of room to work with, but odds are you have room for one strategically chosen furniture item. A single table, chair or miniature bench immediately creates a sense of comfort and welcome. It’s also a great opportunity to show some character and personal style and maybe even upcycle something old and unused. As long as you keep the entryway safe and accessible, you can add one piece as a decorative touch and instantly upgrade the space.
